Did you know!

Barbara McNeir was a former American Beauty Queen, starred in her own TV show and appeared nude in Playboy magazine!

Did you Know!

Edwin Star was the only artist to sing at Michael Jackson's private party to celebrate 30 years in show business. The party held at The Tavern on the Green venue, had a guest list that reads like a who's who of soul music, with the likes of Patti Labella, Freda Payne, Jimmy Ruffin to name and more.

Edwin Starr 1942 - 2003 R. I. P.

One of our all time favourite artistes.
His music features a lot at Cadburys with floorfillers TIME - MY WEAKNESS IS YOU - WAY OVER THERE - STOP ON SIGHT.

A tribute article is in the making!!
But when I get round to finish it I dont know.

Willie Mitchell.

During November 2001 Marti Pelow of Wet Wet Wet fame, spent time with Soul Producer Willie Mitchell, and said,

"We were working until 5am and I was feeling puffed out. Willie's 74 and he's still going, and I'm thinking 'where do you get all this energy and enthusiasm from?(its the soul in his soul) Willie's like a teenager. Its very inspiring you can be 74 and still kick ass. He's the funkiest guy I know."

Arthur Conley
Born 4th Jan 1946 Died 17th Nov 2003
Arthur Conley died in 2003 the Netherlands, he lost his fight against intestinal cancer in November, aged 57.
Born in Atlanta Georgia, making his first recording in 1959 with Arthur & The Corvets. He co-wrote Sweet Soul Music (reached No7 in April 67 uk charts) with Otis Redding in 1967, Arthurs rendition became a world wide hit, helping to establish the 'brassy' Stax sound! (It was originally released on Acto)
Arthur was also a more subtle singer, taking his insperation from Sam Cooke. Evidence of which can be found on a number of albums. Arthur also enjoy success recording and touring with the Stax super group THE SOUL CLAN, which included Wilson Picket, Soloman Burke, and Don Corvay.
He toured Europe in the 70's and moved to Holland to escape the pressures of the USA music scene. He run a indpendant record label and was a TV music consultant.

One of my all time memories is 'Funky Street' and the reaction the crowd gave to the sound when played at the Ship & Rainbow and Connought Hotel in Wolverhampton in the late 60's early 70's good stuff AC
Its whats in the groove that counts!!

As Soul Jock's we get asked some great things which we find amusing. We thought we we share them with you!!

At Cadbury's with the stage full of records. must be something like 5000 7" loads of back up cd's
Q- Hey mate can you play some northern soul ?
A- What do you want ?
Q- Some northern mate ?
A- Giss a title, can you say wot ya want playin ?
Q- I dunno mate some Fxxxxxx Northern !
A- If you tell me what you want playing we'll do our best to give it a spin !
Q- Some Fxxxxx Northern mate!!
We.ve now got to the point of giving up, and try, diplomatically to leave the guy by the stage with a promise to play some 'northern Soul'
A- Ok. mate well sort you some out !
Q-Some Northern mate?
A- yeah
Q- Call yourself Dj........... Wanker !

I started to wonder 'what the hell have we been play alnight then'

One example of why I dont like the term Northern Soul as it covers such a wide range of soul music tastes that what is 'Northern' to one person ain't 'Northern' to the next !

John Russell & Dave Thomas

We tried to get a Rare Soul nite going in Wombourne on a Friday night, we found a small club called' Wombourne Club', nice smallish room, holds about 100, 120 at a push. lights off quite a nice atmosphere. To be honest I wish I'd stuck at it because I think it would have been sucessful...... eventually.
Needless to say we did'nt get to many in , and we hit it on the head after about 4 Fridays.
On the last night, we had a 'large crowd , maybe 40 or so, included was a family and friends, some which, to be fair where not 'soulies'. The scene is set. Please bear in mind that when we do a soul nite. We tend to only bring our soul records. John and I are on a small stage, packed with record boxes, we don't travel light. Young blond girl, pretty, am I allowed to say that, pops on the stage for a request
A - What can we sort out for you ?
Q- Got any dance music ?
A - If you mean upto date clubby stuff ? er . . . no
Q - Hang on
Girl shoots off to her family . . . . . .
Q - Chesney Hawks . . . You know 'Im The One And Only ? looking hopefully,
A- Er ... no we 're tryin to run a soul night
Q - Chubby Cheaker -Lets Twist Again ?
A- Er. . . . . . No
Q- Tom Jones ?
A- No
Then she hits us with
Q- Well what the FxxK av' you got? !
